Abstract

Although we do not have the actual art objects that the first Catholic missionaries brought with them to China, written sources from the missionaries themselves and from Chinese literati have given us descriptions of the art objects and images in the first decades of the Catholic Mission. This talk will provide a comprehensive view of the sources available, focusing on the figures of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, and on the images surrounding the life of Christ. The 153 copper engravings of Evangelicae Historiae Imagines by the Spanish Jesuit Jerome Nadal provided the sources for many of these visual adaptations in Ming China, which will be presented in this lecture.
